Rosemary was a mistake. Her parents, renowned monster hunters, had eventually come across a foe that had eluded them for months. In desperation they sought out the source of the monsters power - drawing from it themselves in hopes of finding some way to track it. They succeeded, but in doing so had tainted themselves with a dangerous occultist magic.
They knew not of the mistake they had made until the birth of their daughter a year later. She was wicked, clawed and fanged and nearly killing her mother in childbirth. Shadows flitted around her like a cloak, her eyes as black as night despite her otherwise Elven appearance. An abomination - one they left for dead in the woods where she was born. She would die, they thought, just as she should before anyone would have to lay their eyes upon her.
She did not die, however. Not long after being abandoned a pair of witches living in secret in the woods found the crying baby. And despite her startling appearance, they could not simply leave the newborn to die - and took her in to raise her as their own.
The witches were uneducated, but they knew how to survive. In their tiny cottage in the dark woods outside of Tusk, Rosemary was taught all she needed to survive in the harsh world around them. They showed her how to hunt, which berries to eat and which to avoid, and they instilled as much of a sense of right in wrong as they could.
Unfortunately, the witches were human and with Rosemary's extended elven lifespan she eventually outlived them. She was alone then in the cottage they shared - and she tended to it as best she could with the knowledge they had instilled in her. She mostly kept to herself unless someone threatened her home - which unfortunately happened more often than she would have liked - or any innocent that tried to travel through the woods.
Not many bandits or thieves lived long enough to tell the tale, but the merchants and families Rosemary assisted did. And their retellings were never flattering. They painted her a monster - The Demon of The Wood they would call her, with her sharp nails and jagged teeth tearing out people's throats. The woods became safer, for whatever that was worth, because no one - bandit or innocent - wished to venture through them in the dark, scared of what might come for them when their back was turned.
